This picture shows the Martian ground of 2008, but NASA’s rover Curiosity just made a surprising discovery about it. The sand on the red planet turns out to be very similar to that on Hawaii. Curiosity was the first ever to analyse non-earthly soil really closely and revealed that the atomic structures of Martian christals look a lot like the chrystals of volcanic regions on our planet, such as Hawaii. With the new results scientists can start to study the history of the Martian soil.
