45-meter wide asteroid known as “2012 DA14” is on its way for a flyby. On 15 February 2013, NASA is predicted it to pass within 32,000 km of Earth, a close scrape in the scale of the solar system. That distance places it well within range of many Earth-orbiting satellites, roughly 1/12th of the distance to the moon. Scientists do not predict an impact, but this near-Earth object is one of many whose orbit places it precariously close to our home planet. The mass of the object is estimated at 130,000 metric tons.
