There’s something we can all agree on: there’s nothing like a passionate kiss. It can even give us a feeling of being on a natural “high”. Why? Human lips are the body’s most exposed erogenous zone, packed with sensitive nerve endings. Therefore, a kiss triggers a cascade of neural messages and chemicals, such as the release of dopamine. Yes, that’s same substance involved in taking drugs like ecstasy, and related to sensations of reward, making us feel intense desire that can lead to feelings of euphoria. That’s why a new romance can feel so addictive.

Photographer Andy Barter created this beautiful series of people embracing and kissing each other. According to the Guardian, each photo took him nearly two hours to create as he adjusted the positions of the lovers, until the balance was right.
