The inhabitants of the Spanish village San Bartolome de Pinares believe that once a year, horses have to be purified by fire. Every year, on the 16th of January, the festival of Saint Anthony – the patron saint of animals – kicks off with the centuries-old tradition Las Luminarias, in which the villagers ride their horses through bonfires set in the streets. The smoke should protect the animals against diseases.
