In the 1950′s the banana our grandparents might have had at home was wiped out and replaced by the soft sweet yellow pal many of us ate this morning. Few can remember how are why it all happened, but regardless, it is happening again. As a powerful fungus wipes out that familiar banana companies, farmers, and consumers have come to a crossroads. Replace the banana with a different kind that we are not accustomed to, or use science to strengthen and improve the one we’ve got?
Dan Koeppel is a journalist and writer who happens to love bananas. His book “Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World” is a chronical of how bananas came to be what they are today, and what is to come in the near future.
