Artist Rinee Shah created a series of prints entitled “Seinfood”, based on the best food jokes that appeared in American television sitcom Seinfeld. In one episode, Reilly notices George Costanza stuffing himself with shrimp cocktail at a meeting, and he remarks: “Hey George, the ocean called – they’re running out of shrimp.” Funny, sure… But is it also correct?
It seems that tropical shrimps have become the most popular seafood in the past 20 years. The biggest problem, however, is not that we are running out of shrimps; more alarming is the increased global industry of fishing for and cultivating of shrimps which leads to major ecological damage. The expansion of shrimp farms caused the disappearance of about 38% of mangrove forests around the world. Furthermore, the fishing nets disturb the seabed, which is disastrous for the soil. Also, sea turtles and other ocean creatures often get entangled in the nets and generally do not survive.
