Its scientific name is Vampyroteuthis infernalis, which means ‘vampire squid from Hell’. It reaches a maximum total length of 30 cm, and displays 8 arms with fleshy spines at the end, connected with a cloak-like skin. The look of the ‘cloak’ and the sometimes red eyes of the animal is what gave it the name of ‘vampire squid’, though it is rather docile. It can be found in temperate and tropical oceans around the world.
