Although not yet that effective, a baby hedgehog already possesses the ability to “defend” itself by rolling into a tight ball, causing all the spines to point outward. When it grows older, a hedgehog sheds its soft baby spines and replaces them with sharper, adult spikes. This is called “quilling.”
