The Delta and Zuiderzee works, a series of construction projects in the Netherlands to protect land from the sea, have been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. These works are an excellent example of human’s constructions competing with nature. Below you can see images of the Afsluitdijk, a 32 km-long dam separating the North Sea and the IJsselmeer lake, and of storm surge barriers such as the Oosterscheldekering and the Maeslantkering, among other constructions.
