We already post about the Myanmar Snub-Nose Monkey, which is included in the list, but there are other 9 creatures that may be unknown to you. The International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University has released its 2012 top 10 new species, which ‘highlights species exploration, biodiversity and the science of taxonomy’, according to its website.

The list includes discoveries with such funny names as ‘Spongebob Squarepants Mushroom’, for its resemblance with the cartoon character, ‘Walking Cactus’, an animal that belongs to an extinct group named Lobopodia, and ‘Wandering Leg Sausage’, a 16 cm. long millipede living in Tanzania. It also highlights a rare iridescent tarantula found in Brazil and an extremely venomous jellyfish.

Below you can check the complete list. I must admit that the common names are really suggestive. For more information, have a look at the Institute’s website.

- Snub-Nosed Monkey
- Bonaire Banded Box Jelly
- Devil’s Worm
- Night-blooming Orchid
- Kollasmosoma sentum
- Spongebob Squarepants Mushroom
- Nepalese Autumn Poppy

- Sazima’s Tarantula
