It doesn’t often make headlines, and many won’t believe it, but Afghanistan is home to some groundbreaking ideas and logistical solutions. Last week some of the country’s most motivated and  creative minds gathered in Kabul for an oppertunity to share their ideas and see which would be chosen by peers and investors. The winning concepts would receive funding, among other benefits, to help make their idea a reality.

My guest is a co-organizer of the event, Juan Andres Rodriguez of the International Synergy Group. Together we talk about lessons learned from such an event, including one of the eye-opening ideas presented at the conference: Easy-Hajj, a new way to digitally manage data regarding who goes on the Hajj to Mecca.  We also get into crowd source mapping projects for health and interactive voice recognition systems that have been implemented in Afghanistan.

For more information,  check out the Kabul Innovation Lab online.

Talking About Ourselves Is Intrinsically Rewarding: Research

Ambrose Bierce said it best in his The Devil’s Dictionary: ‘Bore, n.: A person who talks when you wish him to listen.’ Researchers, however, offer scientific evidence: talking about ourselves activates the areas of the brain linked to value and motivation, the same stimulated by food, sex, money and drug addiction.
