Napoleon Chagnon’s study breeds fascination, controversy.

When American anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon discovered the Yanomamo Tribe in the upper reaches of the Orinoco River, his findings were shocking. So-called “primitive” people were not always peaceful; in fact, this tribe saw violence and drug-induced trances as beneficial to their society. Chagnon’s discovery also generated a lot of controversy from his peers, over whether he influenced the tribe’s behavior or even whether he introduced a measles epidemic. Here’s a video of his earliest discovery of the tribe, and is unusual because it showcases Chagnon as part of the study.
